Especially with siege-tower forts, if the kingdom is too busy to chase you off, then they likely won't counter-attack at all. Someplace out-of-the way like Tevarin or Haringoth Castle work pretty well. Pick a target that is only claimed by the owning faction, and hit it while they are getting beat up by 2+ kingdoms. Dump any troops that won't be A-listers in a siege. If you are doing the independent start, its all about location and timing. You either have to snag a castle/town as an independent, which can be rough, but doable, or you need to rebel from an existing kingdom. The really easy way, is to play as a female, marry somebody who isn't a total loser, and rebel together. Ride around with a small, fast group helping out lords as much as possible (this is usually why I merc for a while - to get as much exposure to different lords as possible), free anyone you catch for the Honor & rep. Carry your adventure to the future with the Mount&Blade space mod, exploring alien worlds with light-sabers instead of Mount&Blade's default medieval Earth setting.The trick really has to do with all of the groundwork that you do long before starting a kingdom.
